Self-lay

If you’re building a large multi-unit development a new water main will normally be required

If you’re still in the early stages of your development, we would recommend that you submit a pre-development enquiry, which will provide you with useful information about the location and capacity of existing services within and adjacent to your site.

You can use a self-lay provider (SLP) to design and lay the new water mains and services, or you can apply to us, and we will carry out the work. Alternatively, you can also choose to contact a NAV (New Appointments and Variations)

Working with a self-lay provider

New water mains for your development can be laid by your own contractor, also known as an SLP. Once your development is complete, we will adopt the water network.

SLPs must be accredited to the Water Industry Registration Scheme (WIRS) which is run by the LRQA. Being accredited means they work to national industry standards, so they understand our policies and procedures for laying new mains and making service connections.

You can find a WIRS accredited company, and information on the scheme, on the LRQA website.

Codes for adoption

In January 2021 Ofwat introduced a new standard practice across the water industry in England for water companies to follow when adopting self-laid mains.

This is known as the Code for Adoption. For further information please see the Water UK approved documents.

Wessex Water standpipe hire

To access a temporary water supply from our water distribution network, you will need to hire a portable standpipe.
